Can You Eat Popcorn?

I have often heard from many people that eating popcorn is a huge no no when it comes to living with Crohn’s Disease. In fact, knowledge of the ill effects popcorn can have on people with Crohn’s Disease is apparently so well known that my late wife and her family used to try and prevent me from eating it whenever it was in the house, or scold me for having some while at the movies. Some online even go so far as to say that eating it will earn those of us with this disease a quick trip to the emergency room. What is odd is that my doctor never told me to stay away from popcorn before or after my surgery, and I also have never once had a problem with eating it, which in turn means I have no hesitation when it comes to ordering a giant bag of it while at the movies, or popping it up when viewing something at home. Am I the only one that is able to enjoy this wonderful treat? Does anyone else out there recklessly eat popcorn all the time because it simply doesn’t deliver upon all the threats we have been told to expect?

  1. Medically speaking you shouldn't eat popcorn if you have a diverticuli or any type of "little pocket" of space that it could get lodged in and cause an infection or diverticulitis. But from a movie goer and popcorn lover I have to admit, I eat it. I can't eat it every day and more often than not it does hurt a little coming out but I do eat it and it never causes belly problems. Or hasn't yet. So that is why they tell you not to eat it. But technically if you don't have a diverticuli it really isn't a problem. But everyone is different.

  2. That makes sense. Don't want an unpopped kernal getting caught in there. Of course like most things people take it out of context and the next thing you know everyone with Crohn's Disease shouldn't have it.

  3. I eat it occasionally at the movie. However, I do notice that I feel a lot better when I stay away from it.

  4. I love popcorn too!! And my friends always stop me from eating it which while I do appreciate them looking out for me I miss my popcorn!! So I tried this: http://shop.justpoppin.com/gourmet-popcorn-kernels-hulless-popcorn.html

Its virtually hulless so it has less of the little stuff that could cause problems. So far, so good. I'm asking my doc next time I talk to him if popcorn really is the boogie monster.

  5. For me it is the boogie monster. Ate it once and suffered for it. Got to feeling much better and thought certainly it wasn't the popcorn. Popcorn tastes so good. Ate a half a bag of microwave popcorn two days before Thanksgiving, ended up back on steroids and antibiotics and am just now regaining my energy. No more popcorn for me.
